Therefore, it is within this landscape of powerful big techs that Nostr emerges.

The project began in 2019, created by Fiatjaf, a Brazilian developer who chose to remain anonymous. However, it was in early 2022 that Nostr started attracting a large number of new users and capturing the attention of Jack Dorsey, the former Twitter CEO.

As we mentioned earlier, Dorsey has already donated 14 Bitcoins to the project and, more recently, contributed another US$ 5 million to help build Nostr and tools based on the protocol.

What is Nostr?

Nostr is a free and open-source protocol capable of creating a global social network without the need for a centralized server or a company controlling operations.

Thus, this system is entirely resistant to censorship and functions as a social network similar to X, but decentralized.

And that changes the way we use the internet.

Unlike centralized servers, Nostr relays only store data directly linked to them, not everything from everyone, as a data center would.

Thus, there is no single point of failure or risk of censorship. If one relay is attacked, others remain available to ensure network access.

Difference Between Today’s Internet and Nostr

As illustrated in the image below, in today’s world, when Alice wants to send a message to Bob, that message goes through the infrastructure of a Big Tech (AWS) before it is actually delivered to Bob.

When Alice sends a message, it is transmitted to Bob through multiple relays. Each relay also keeps a copy of the message. Thus, both Bob and Alice have the option to run their own personal relays, eliminating dependence on third-party relays. See below.

To post on Nostr, all you need to do is share a text or a photo. The app you are using will then sign that post with your key and transmit it to the relays. And to read messages from other users, the app you are using will request updates from different relays.

Additionally, it is possible to have accounts on multiple clients, which are the applications created on Nostr. To do this, simply use your access key to log into all these accounts.

How to create an account and use Nostr?

Remember that Nostr is a protocol, and you can use the applications built on top of it. The most well-known one is a kind of Twitter clone.

There are several ways to access Nostr, with the most common being:

• Damus for iPhone
• Amethyst for Android
• Iris or Snort for PC

Since we have an iPhone, we will show the step-by-step guide using the Damus app.

The first step is to download Damus from the Apple Store.

Step 2

Open the app and click on “Let’s get started!”

Step 3

Accept the terms of service. Click on “Accept”.

Step 4

If you already have a NOSTR account, simply paste your key to access your account. However, since we are creating a new account, click on “Create Account”.

Step 5

Once you click “Create Account”, your public key and an avatar will be displayed on the screen. You can replace this avatar with a photo of yourself and enter your name and description.

Then, just click on “Create Account Now”.

Step 6

Now, your public and private keys will be displayed.

It is extremely important to copy and store the private key in a safe place, as anyone with this key will have access to your profile.

Remember: just like in Bitcoin, your public key allows people to find you on NOSTR.

After copying both keys, the checkboxes will turn green, and you can proceed by clicking “Let’s go”.

This is my profile, including my data, public key, and descriptions, along with a photo I posted.

Notice that just below the lightning bolt icon, the number 284 appears. This is the total number of satoshis I received for this post.

There were 3 “zaps”, as indicated, which together amounted to 284 satoshis sent to me.

If I click on these 3 zaps, I can see who sent them and the amount.

Now, returning to my profile and clicking the lightning bolt icon next to the envelope, you can send satoshis directly to me, along with reactions, without needing to do so on a specific post.

You can either enter the amount of satoshis you want to send or use the pre-set amounts. You can also send a message.

When everything is ready, just click on “Zap User”.

By default, your “feed” (home page) will be empty.

2. Searching for Other Users

From the main page, click on the magnifying glass icon (in the top right corner) and type in the name of the profile you are looking for.

In this example, we will search for the Area Bitcoin profile.

Be cautious of profiles attempting to impersonate the one you’re searching for, especially if it belongs to a public figure or a well-known institution.

To ensure you’re accessing the correct profile, use its public key, which is unique across the network.

3. Making a Post (Note)

In Amethyst, you can post notes publicly to everyone connected to the same relays as you or send private messages to specific users.

3.1 Sending a public note

From the home page, click on the pen icon (in the bottom right corner) and a screen containing a a text box will appear.

Once you have finished entering your text, click on “Save”.

3.2 Sending a private note

From the page of the profile you wish to chat with privately, click on the envelope icon at the top of the screen and a screen similar to the one shown below will appear.

In the text box labeled “reply here…”, type the message you want to send. Once you’re finished, click the airplane icon to send it.

Back on the home page, you can view all the private messages you’ve sent by clicking the envelope icon located in the bottom bar of the app screen.

In addition to your sent messages, the app will display all messages from the Nostr global channel and the Amethyst channel.

If you’d prefer not to receive notifications from these channels, you can choose to “unfollow these channels.”

4. Connecting your Bitcoin Lightning wallet to Amethyst

While still on the main page, click on your profile picture to display the side menu.

If you’d like to edit the pre-selected values, you can also customise which options will appear. Press and hold the Lightning icon until a new window opens. After making your changes, click “Save” to confirm.

Once you have finished making your changes, click “Save”.

7. Enabling TOR by default in your connections

Amethyst now includes built-in support for the Tor network, offering enhanced privacy features. You can choose to connect through software running a Tor proxy, such as Orbot, or let the Amethyst application handle the proxy setup directly.

To enable this, navigate to the side menu and click on “Privacy Options”. Adjust the parameters to suit your preferences or select one of the pre-configured profiles under “Tor Presets/Privacy”.

In this article, you’ll learn about Primal, a social media platform with an integrated Bitcoin wallet, built using the Nostr protocol. Additionally, we’ll show you how to start using Nostr through Primal.

First, what is Nostr?

Nostr is an open-source protocol that offers a decentralized alternative to traditional web and social media, where each user controls their digital identity and content without relying on centralized intermediaries.

The protocol is quickly gaining prominence as a promising ecosystem for free expression. Based on principles similar to Bitcoin, Nostr gives users complete control over their communication, without the risk of censorship from large companies.

One of Nostr’s most innovative features is its native integration with Bitcoin and the Lightning Network. This allows users to include their Lightning addresses in their profiles and send satoshi tips (small units of Bitcoin) for posts they like. 

This feature provides a direct way to show monetary appreciation for content, unlike conventional social networks.  

For content creators and regular users, Nostr not only offers a censorship-free alternative but also a new form of digital engagement that values privacy and autonomy.

Several applications based on this technology have emerged from Nostr, such as Primal, Damus, and Amethyst, which are Nostr clients and are being developed to offer a faster and more efficient user experience.  

But, what are clients?

Nostr clients are software applications that allow users to connect to the Nostr protocol and interact with the various relays that store data.

Now that you know what Nostr is, let’s dive into Primal.

What is Primal?

Primal is one of the main platforms (apps) in the Nostr ecosystem, designed to offer a decentralized, censorship-resistant solution for social media, with Bitcoin and Lightning integration.  

Unlike traditional centralized platforms, Primal gives users more control over their data and interactions.

As you can see in the image above, Primal looks a lot like Twitter (X social network), where users can post, send inbox messages to another user, like, save, share, and comment. 

Additionally, users can send satoshis to each other as thanks for relevant content.  

In 2023, Primal received $1 million in funding from investors such as Ten31 and Hivemind Ventures, becoming the first venture-backed startup focused exclusively on creating applications based on the Nostr protocol.

Pretty cool, right? But who’s behind this app?

Who created Primal?

Primal was created by Miljan Braticevic, an experienced software entrepreneur. 

Over the years, he has been involved in several successful startups, especially in the enterprise software and developer tools sectors.

In 2016, he attempted to retire but became interested in Bitcoin and decided to continue his entrepreneurial career.  

Rise Wallet and more!

Miljan founded Rise Wallet, a company that helped new users enter the world of Bitcoin using physical gift cards.  

The idea was simple: users would buy a gift card worth $25, $50, or $100, install the Rise wallet, scan the code, and receive their Bitcoin easily and securely. 

However, despite their efforts, the startup didn’t achieve the expected success, and Miljan eventually sold the company.  

In the following years, Miljan dedicated himself to researching and testing different protocols, even attempting to create his own. However, he wasn’t satisfied with the results until he discovered the Nostr protocol in 2022.  

Initially skeptical, Miljan changed his mind when he saw the attention Nostr was receiving, especially after Jack Dorsey mentioned it on Twitter. After reading the specifications, Miljan saw Nostr’s potential and decided to create a new project: Primal.  

Thus, Primal was born from Miljan’s passion for innovation and his desire to contribute to the advancement of decentralized technologies.

Key features of Primal

Here are some of the key features of Primal, now that you’re familiar with the app and its creator:

1. Free and open-source platform

Users don’t need to pay to use the platform; it’s completely free. Just download it and start using it.  

Additionally, Primal is open-source, meaning anyone or any developer can participate in the project’s development.

2. ZAPs

Primal has a “zaps” feature, which are small Bitcoin transactions that users can send directly to other creators and posts. 

These micropayments are made easy through integration with the Lightning Network, ensuring fast and cost-free transactions.

3. Integrated Lightning Wallet

Users can store and exchange their Bitcoins directly within the Primal app, thanks to the integrated Lightning wallet. This simplifies the process, eliminates unnecessary hurdles, and makes it easier to participate in the Nostr economy.  

Additionally, this Bitcoin Lightning wallet allows you to send, scan, and receive payments.

Another cool feature of the wallet is that by clicking the money exchange symbol in the top right corner of the screen, users can exchange their local currency for satoshis. 

By clicking “purchase now“, the buying process is done through the App Store, using your registered Apple account and card.

4. Censorship-resistant

Primal has a simple and user-friendly interface, but its real power lies in its commitment to decentralization. It connects to several Nostr relays, ensuring that no company or person controls the network. This helps prevent censorship and gives users more control over their online presence.

How to set up a Primal account

Now let’s understand how you can use Primal in practice. Just follow the steps below:

Step 1 – Download the app:

Go to the site primal.net and choose whether to download the app for mobile (supports iOS and Android) or use it directly on your PC. For this guide, I’ll show you how to install it on a mobile device. So, I’ll download the app.

Step 2 – Create your account:

After downloading the app from the official site, a screen will appear where you can either log in or create an account. 

For this guide, we’ll create a fictional Area Bitcoin blog account. After clicking “create account“, on the next screen, you’ll enter your name and a short description about yourself, then click “Next.”

Step 3 – Customize your interests:

On the next screen, Primal will ask your interests. I selected Bitcoin, Nostr, music, and sports. After clicking “next”, a confirmation screen will appear for your bio,  you can also change your banner photo. 

If everything looks good, just click “Create Account” to set up the account.

Step 4 – Secure your keys:

Done, now your account is created!  

However, an important message will appear. Primal warns that your keys are available in the account settings.  

From now on, this account has a private key and a public key, much like how Bitcoin works. If you lose your private key, you’ll lose access to your account, so it’s crucial to keep your private key safe. 

The public key, as the name implies, is public and can be used for others to find your profile on any Nostr app.

Account created, it’s time to activate the wallet in Primal!

For that the app will ask for some information, such as name, email, date of birth, and country of residence. This seems a bit counterintuitive for a privacy-focused platform, but apart from the email, I entered random data. 

Afterward, just click “next”.

Step 5 – Activate your wallet and email confirmation:

The app will now ask for an email confirmation, where you’ll enter the code in the designated space. 

Once done, click “finish”, and a “success, your wallet is activated” screen will appear. This Lightning wallet allows you to send and receive Bitcoin via zaps within Primal.

Step 6 – your account is ready:

Congratulations, your account is set up!  

After clicking “done”, the screen will show your account in operation, already following other accounts based on your interests. 

Now you can explore the app and make your first posts!

Both Nostr and Primal are still in their early stages, but the potential is clear. By combining decentralization, micropayments, and ease of use, Primal envisions a future where creators are paid directly, users control their data, and censorship is non-existent.

Traditional social networks are leaving users dissatisfied due to increased censorship, advertisements, and, in some cases, even requiring paid subscriptions to use and have a more personalized experience.

Therefore, many developers are striving to create a decentralized social network where people can express themselves freely without the risk of having their information leaked or used by large corporations.

This is how the Damus app emerged, a Nostr client, which is a social network similar to X (formerly Twitter). And today, we will understand more about Damus in this article. 

Let’s dive in!

What is Nostr?

Nostr is a free, open-source protocol that allows the creation of a decentralized social network; meaning it doesn’t require a central server or a company responsible for its operations.

This protocol enables the existence of a censorship-resistant social network, and the most common way people use Nostr is through apps similar to Twitter (X).

However, it is possible to create a Nostr client with various functionalities, such as an app similar to Telegram or a censorship-resistant version of Wikipedia.

Nostr operates with two essential components:

• Clients: These are apps created on the platform and function as a social network. Damus, which we will discuss later, is a Nostr client.
• Relays: These are software and hardware that send, receive, and store text messages. Relays can be operated by anyone with a computer and an Internet connection. They function similarly to Bitcoin nodes.

Additionally, creating an account on a Nostr client does not require providing your name, date of birth, email, or any similar information.

Therefore, creating an account on one Nostr client also serves other Nostr clients, functioning as a large network of interconnected apps.

What is Damus?

Damus is a decentralized social network developed by William Casarin that operates on Nostr.

Damus is a Nostr client, meaning an app available for iOS, iPad, and MacOS. It was officially released on the App Store on January 31, 2023.

The app’s purpose is to be similar to X but aims to surpass it. With Damus, you can post texts, videos, images, and even gifs. Additionally, texts can be longer than on X.

You can also make ‘zaps’ in the app, which is essentially sending some satoshis to a user directly through the app.

Moreover, you can ‘zap’ someone’s profile or a post they made.

How did the Damus app emerge on Nostr?

Damus, a decentralized social network, emerged on Nostr with the support of important figures in the Bitcoin world like Jack Dorsey and William Casarin, the project’s creator and developer.

Shortly after Nostr’s protocol was announced, several people supported the idea, including Twitter’s co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey, who donated nearly 14 BTC, equivalent to US$245,000 at the time, to fund Nostr’s development in 2022.

Fiatjaf, Nostr’s programmer and creator, received the donation. He then announced on his Twitter (X) profile that half of the funds would go to the DFND – Damus Foundation for Nostr Development.

Soon after, Jack Dorsey himself tweeted when the Damus app was launched.

As stated above, Damus was founded and developed by William Casarin. However, it had the help of 44 more developers involved in the project.

In addition, the application was first released on the App Store, only for iPhone.

Characteristics of Damus

As we have seen throughout the article, Damus is a decentralized social networking app that gained prominence due to its unique features, based on the Nostr protocol (Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays).

Some of its main characteristics are:

• User control: There is no platform to ban users, as everything is built on an open-source system.
• No registration required: No need to share personal information.
• No addictive algorithms and free from ads and advertisements.
• You can send and receive tips (zaps) via the Lightning Network, support content creators, and help circulate the best money in the world, Bitcoin.
• Relays help avoid DDoS attacks.
• Interoperable with any other Nostr app.

Damus Purple

Damus Purple is a subscription service aimed at “free speech maximalists,” according to their website. This subscription provides exclusive features to users and helps fund the project.

However, it is important to note that subscribing to Damus Purple is not necessary to have a good experience with the app. The subscription aims to offer additional benefits to those who wish to support the project financially.

Subscribers to Damus Purple get the following benefits:

• Support Damus development, helping to build the future of decentralized communication;
• Early access to premium features, such as automatic translation and longer notes;
• Receive a special badge on their profile as recognition for their contribution to the technology.

The Damus Purple subscription costs 15,000 sats per month, which is approximately $8.50 at the current exchange rate, and can be paid via Lightning or fiat currency through Apple Pay for iOS devices.

How does privacy work in the Damus app?

Privacy in Damus is guaranteed by a system of public and private keys (similar to Bitcoin), eliminating the need for logins and putting users in control of their data.

Since it is a decentralized network, privacy is a very important factor in Damus. Its proposal is to be much more secure with your data than any other social networking app.

Therefore, your IP address is exposed to relays (transmitters) you connect to and third-party media hosts, such as nostr.build, imgur.com, giphy.com, youtube.com, among others.

Your IP is rendered on Damus itself. To enhance your privacy, consider using a service that hides your IP address from online trackers, such as VPN services.

Relays can also identify which public keys you are requesting, meaning your public key will be linked to your IP address.

It is publicly known which other profiles (npubs – public addresses) you are exchanging direct messages (DMs) with. However, the content of the DMs is encrypted.

Comparing Damus with other apps

Damus has emerged as an efficient and decentralized alternative to Twitter and Mastodon, which also offer decentralized social networking.

However, Damus stands out for its unique aspects compared to these alternatives.

While Twitter operates with a centralized server, Mastodon has several servers distributed around the world. However, there is a risk of some of these servers acting authoritatively and compromising the network.

In the case of Damus, there are multiple servers, known as relays, globally distributed. Therefore, if you post something that a specific relay does not want to transmit, your message will still be disseminated by another relay, ensuring uncensored communication.

How to use Damus on Nostr?

First, download the Damus app from the App Store.

After downloading the app, open it and click on “Let’s get started!”. Don’t forget to accept the terms of service.

If you already have a Nostr account, just paste your access key. But if you are creating a new account, click on ‘Create Account’.

Let’s follow the tutorial for those creating their first account on Damus.

After clicking on “Create Account,” your public key and an avatar will be displayed on the screen. If you wish, you can replace this avatar with a photo of yourself and enter your name and description.

Then, click on “Create Account Now.”

Now, your public and private keys will be displayed on the screen. Store the private key in a safe place, as it is the key to access your profile.

Done! Now, when you access Damus, you will notice that the interface is very similar to Twitter’s.

Finally, by clicking on your avatar (in the upper left corner), a sidebar with several options will be displayed.

In this sidebar, you can access your profile, where you will find information about your public key, the number of people you follow, your followers, and the number of relays you are connected to.

Additionally, in the “wallet” tab, you can connect a wallet to start receiving and sending satoshis via the app through the Lightning Network.

Conclusion

The internet is evolving, and this isn’t the “web 3” idea that many crypto enthusiasts have been spreading around.

Damus is the result of a truly decentralized protocol that can change the way we use social networks, websites, and how our information is shared on the internet.

If you think traditional social networks are boring, with too much censorship, excessive ads, and an algorithm that doesn’t seem useful, then Damus is an excellent alternative to escape the dominance of big techs owning social networks.

Additionally, if you don’t have an iOS device to use Damus, don’t worry, as there is an Android equivalent called Amethyst.

The app works the same way and has a similar interface but is for Android.
