In recent years, a recurring topic has been the growing concern about censorship exercised by major tech companies that dominate the leading social media platforms.

Twitter (X), in particular, has been under scrutiny, as accounts are frequently suspended not only due to legal decisions but also as a result of internal measures taken by the platform.

Additionally, Twitter owner Elon Musk announced that free accounts would have a daily limit on the number of tweets they could view. This measure sparked a wave of dissatisfaction among users, making Twitter a widely discussed topic in Brazil, which in turn contributed to the discovery of Nostr, a protocol focused on the decentralization of social networks.

Nostr has been gaining recognition and expansion. One of the project’s founders is Brazilian, Edward Snowden’s name is associated with it, and Jack Dorsey has shown his support by donating 14 Bitcoins, equivalent to approximately US$ 245,000, to the platform’s ongoing development.

Thus, with its credibility rising, Forbes reported that Nostr already has 18 million active users.

In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about the Nostr protocol.

Table of contents

How did the Nostr protocol emerge?

What is Nostr?

Similarities between Nostr and Bitcoin

How does Nostr work?

Difference Between Today’s Internet and Nostr

How to create an account and use Nostr?

How do zaps and Bitcoin micropayments work on Nostr?

Conclusion

How did the Nostr protocol emerge?

In 1991, Tim Berners-Lee laid the foundation for the Internet with the invention of the World Wide Web (WWW), hoping it would be a global network open to everyone, where people could communicate freely and without censorship.

However, unfortunately, this initial vision of Tim Berners-Lee didn’t last long.

Today, the internet is dominated by giants like Google, Amazon, Meta, and a handful of other companies. The platforms we use, such as Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, rely on centralized services that control and own our data.

Therefore, it is within this landscape of powerful big techs that Nostr emerges.

The project began in 2019, created by Fiatjaf, a Brazilian developer who chose to remain anonymous. However, it was in early 2022 that Nostr started attracting a large number of new users and capturing the attention of Jack Dorsey, the former Twitter CEO.

As we mentioned earlier, Dorsey has already donated 14 Bitcoins to the project and, more recently, contributed another US$ 5 million to help build Nostr and tools based on the protocol.

What is Nostr?

Nostr is a free and open-source protocol capable of creating a global social network without the need for a centralized server or a company controlling operations.

Thus, this system is entirely resistant to censorship and functions as a social network similar to X, but decentralized.

On this platform, users can create posts, share content, and follow other people, just like in other social networks.

The idea behind this protocol is that Nostr can serve as the foundation for creating other decentralized projects, such as a Telegram-like service and a version of Wikipedia that cannot be censored.

Therefore, in summary, Nostr represents a 3-in-1 revolution.

That is, it is an innovative protocol that combines social networking, instant Bitcoin payments (using the Lightning Network), and direct interaction between content creators and consumers online through the “value4value” concept.

Why is Nostr different from other social networks?

Nostr sets itself apart from existing social networks because it does not require users to enter their name, phone number, or email when creating an account.

Additionally, users have the freedom to choose where to store their data, whether on their own server or a third-party server. If they later decide to switch servers, they also have that flexibility.

Now, the user owns their own data.

Similarities between Nostr and Bitcoin

Just like Bitcoin, Nostr uses cryptographic keys. That means each user has a private key, which is used to sign and transmit their posts through relays, and a public key, which serves as an address that others can use to find them.

Some people even include their Nostr public key in their X bios, for example.

Furthermore, the protocol’s architecture is somewhat similar to Bitcoin, where public keys represent user profiles on the social network, just like addresses in the Bitcoin network. On the other hand, private keys sign posts and profile changes, just like they sign and propagate transactions in the Bitcoin network.

All this information is distributed globally across nodes, or relays, allowing each user to own their own data without relying on big tech companies.

Although many people believe that Nostr was built on Bitcoin technology, this is incorrect. Nostr does not operate on a blockchain, does not rely on a distributed consensus like Proof of Work, and does not have its own token.

Bitcoin Integrations

Being an open-source project, Nostr features several integrations with Bitcoin.

One such integration is the ability to send and receive Bitcoin via Lightning through the platform, combining two powerful forces: a truly decentralized social network and a truly decentralized currency

It is a fact that Nostr is still very recent and must undergo many tests. However, it represents a significant change in our current digital environment.

As we have seen in this article, today’s social media environment is controlled by a monopoly of big techs that own our data, monitor all our online activities, and have the power to ban and censor users at will.

How does Nostr work?

The decentralization of Nostr is based on two essential components:

clients

and relays

Clients

To use Nostr, you need to run a client, which is how users interact with the protocol. Clients are applications built on the Nostr platform (protocol), like a social network, for example.

Learn more about it here: what are Nostr Clients?

Relays

On the other hand, a relay is a software and hardware that sends, receives, and stores text messages.

These relays can be operated by anyone with a computer and an internet connection. That means there is no need to store Nostr’s information on a data center owned by Amazon or Google, for example.

And that changes the way we use the internet.

Unlike centralized servers, Nostr relays only store data directly linked to them, not everything from everyone, as a data center would.

Thus, there is no single point of failure or risk of censorship. If one relay is attacked, others remain available to ensure network access.

Understood. Here is the exact translation of your text, maintaining the original structure, formatting, and content:

Difference Between Today’s Internet and Nostr

As illustrated in the image below, in today’s world, when Alice wants to send a message to Bob, that message goes through the infrastructure of a Big Tech (AWS) before it is actually delivered to Bob.

However, in the context of Nostr, the dynamic is different.

When Alice sends a message, it is transmitted to Bob through multiple relays. Each relay also keeps a copy of the message. Thus, both Bob and Alice have the option to run their own personal relays, eliminating dependence on third-party relays. See below.

To post on Nostr, all you need to do is share a text or a photo. The app you are using will then sign that post with your key and transmit it to the relays. And to read messages from other users, the app you are using will request updates from different relays.

This structure allows users to migrate their profiles and followers from one social network to another, using the same protocol, making social networks interoperable.

Additionally, it is possible to have accounts on multiple clients, which are the applications created on Nostr. To do this, simply use your access key to log into all these accounts.

Pretty simple, right?! Now that you understand how Nostr works, let’s see how to create an account!

How to create an account and use Nostr?

Remember that Nostr is a protocol, and you can use the applications built on top of it. The most well-known one is a kind of Twitter clone.

There are several ways to access Nostr, with the most common being:

Damus for iPhone

Amethyst for Android

Iris or Snort for PC

Since we have an iPhone, we will show the step-by-step guide using the Damus app.

Step 1

The first step is to download Damus from the Apple Store.

Step 2

Open the app and click on “Let’s get started!”

Step 3

Accept the terms of service. Click on “Accept”.

Step 4

If you already have a NOSTR account, simply paste your key to access your account. However, since we are creating a new account, click on “Create Account”.

Step 5

Once you click “Create Account”, your public key and an avatar will be displayed on the screen. You can replace this avatar with a photo of yourself and enter your name and description.

Then, just click on “Create Account Now”.

Step 6

Now, your public and private keys will be displayed.

It is extremely important to copy and store the private key in a safe place, as anyone with this key will have access to your profile.

Remember: just like in Bitcoin, your public key allows people to find you on NOSTR.

After copying both keys, the checkboxes will turn green, and you can proceed by clicking “Let’s go”.

Step 7

Now that you have entered NOSTR, notice how the entire interface is very similar to Twitter.

Step 8

If you click on your avatar, a sidebar with several options will appear.

Step 9

If you click on “My Profile”, you will see your public key, information that your profile is using 4 relays, and that you are following 3 people.

Additionally, when you create an account, it automatically follows the Damus app, the creator of Damus, and yourself.

Step 10

By clicking on “Wallet” (still in the sidebar menu), you can connect a Lightning wallet to send and receive sats (satoshis, the smallest unit of Bitcoin) through the Lightning Network.

Step 11

Clicking on “Relays” allows you to see where your data is stored, and you can add or remove relays as you wish.

Step 12

Finally, in the “Settings” section, you can modify personal data, adjust app functionalities, and configure zap settings.

How do zaps and Bitcoin micropayments work on Nostr?

Now that I have explained how to create a Nostr account from scratch, I will show my own configured account.

Additionally, I will explain how “zaps” work, which are Bitcoin micropayments via Lightning Network. These are what enable content creators and consumers to exchange value and content in a decentralized way.

This is my profile, including my data, public key, and descriptions, along with a photo I posted.

Notice that just below the lightning bolt icon, the number 284 appears. This is the total number of satoshis I received for this post.

There were 3 “zaps”, as indicated, which together amounted to 284 satoshis sent to me.

If I click on these 3 zaps, I can see who sent them and the amount.

Now, returning to my profile and clicking the lightning bolt icon next to the envelope, you can send satoshis directly to me, along with reactions, without needing to do so on a specific post.

You can either enter the amount of satoshis you want to send or use the pre-set amounts. You can also send a message.

When everything is ready, just click on “Zap User”.

Oh, and I almost forgot! Clicking on “Public” (in the upper right corner) will show these options:

Public: Visible to everyone

Private: Only you can see it

Anonymous: No one will know who sent the sats

None: Only a Lightning payment is sent, without linking it to Nostr

To receive these payments, you need to link your account to a Lightning wallet. I personally connected mine to the Wallet of Satoshi.

When opening the wallet (in this case, Wallet of Satoshi), you can see all the zaps received, along with the messages from those who sent them.

Amethyst is an app built for the Android operating system, designed to facilitate interaction with the Nostr network. This platform offers a unique alternative to traditional social media by promoting direct, intermediary-free communication between users.

In this article, we’ll explore the features, technical aspects, and benefits of the Amethyst app, while also examining its importance in the growing landscape of decentralized social networks.

Let’s get started!

Table of Contents

What Is Nostr?

The Amethyst App for Android

Architecture and Technologies Used in Amethyst

Using Amethyst in Practice

Benefits of Using Amethyst and the Nostr Network

Comparison with Other Nostr Clients and Traditional Social Networks

Challenges and Limitations of Amethyst and Nostr

What Is Nostr?

Nostr is a decentralized communication protocol built on public key cryptography. It supports the development of decentralized social network applications and peer-to-peer communication channels. The primary aim of Nostr is to enable information exchange without relying on central servers, prioritizing user privacy and freedom of expression.

Unlike traditional social media platforms, where companies control both the platform and message storage, Nostr gives users the freedom to choose their relays, granting full control over where their data is stored.

The Amethyst App for Android

Amethyst, developed by Vitor Pamplona, is a Nostr client designed specifically for Android devices. This open-source application has a vibrant community of over 100 developers actively contributing to its ongoing improvement.

Known for its user-friendly interface, Amethyst excels at delivering an intuitive user experience within a decentralized environment.

In the sections below, we’ll explore its key features and discover what sets it apart from other social media clients.

Ready to dive in? Let’s go!

Key Features of Amethyst

1. Intuitive User Interface

Amethyst is designed with simplicity in mind, offering a graphical interface similar to conventional social networks. However, it is backed by a robust technical infrastructure that ensures greater privacy and freedom for users.

The app focuses on delivering an effortless user experience, making it easy for even those unfamiliar with decentralized networks to navigate and interact seamlessly.

2. Profile Creation and Management

Amethyst uses a unique system where each user’s profile is identified by a public key, serving as their primary identifier on the Nostr network.

To maintain security, users safeguard a private key, which is used to sign messages and authenticate their profiles. This public-private key system eliminates the need for traditional account creation with email and passwords, enhancing security and anonymity for users.

3. Authenticated Messages

A core feature of Nostr is that all user messages are digitally signed, allowing any user on the network to verify their authenticity. This ensures the integrity and legitimacy of interactions across the platform.

Amethyst leverages this functionality to prevent message manipulation and create a trusted communication environment for its users.

4. Relay Connections

To communicate on the Nostr network, Amethyst allows users to connect to different relays. This flexibility is one of the most important aspects of Nostr, as it allows users to choose which servers they want to use to store and relay their messages.

Amethyst thus provides an easy-to-configure interface so that users can add and remove relays as needed, optimizing data distribution and increasing network resilience.

5. Security and Privacy

Amethyst, built on the Nostr protocol, ensures message privacy through end-to-end encryption.

The app does not collect user data, and all interactions occur directly between devices and network relays. By avoiding centralized servers and refraining from storing personal information, Amethyst significantly reduces the risk of data exposure to potential attackers.

A noteworthy addition to Amethyst is its support for the Tor network.

What is the Tor Network?

The Tor network (The Onion Router) is an anonymity system that uses multiple layers of encryption to protect data traffic. As data passes through a series of servers (called “nodes”), each layer of encryption is gradually removed, making it nearly impossible to trace the origin of the data. Tor is widely used to enhance privacy and protect users from identification or tracking online.

How Tor Enhances Amethyst

With Tor integration, Amethyst provides an additional layer of security and anonymity. This feature is particularly valuable for platforms prioritizing privacy and freedom of expression. By using Tor, Amethyst helps users maintain anonymity, prevent third-party censorship, and block attempts to monitor or filter network traffic. This ensures safer, more private communication for its users.

6. Bitcoin Integration

Amethyst integrates seamlessly with the Bitcoin network through the Lightning Network, enabling innovative payment features like the “value4value” model.

This model allows users to directly and financially support their favorite content creators, fostering a transparent and decentralised approach to monetization. With no hidden rules or risks of losing sponsorships due to adherence to arbitrary standards, this mechanism brings a revolutionary shift to the content creation landscape.

Architecture and Technologies Used in Amethyst

Amethyst is built with Kotlin, one of the most advanced programming languages for Android app development.

The app’s architecture follows the principles of the reactive programming model, enabling efficient communication and real-time updates for messages received from relays.

Use of Kotlin and Android Jetpack

As mentioned earlier, Amethyst is developed in Kotlin, a language known for its concise syntax and enhanced error safety compared to Java.

Additionally, the integration of Android Jetpack further enhances the app by enabling the use of modern, modular components, making it both scalable and easier to maintain.

Local Storage and Relay Synchronization

While Nostr primarily depends on relays for storage, Amethyst enhances user experience by utilizing local storage to cache messages. This not only improves loading speed but also enables users to access content offline.

Relay synchronization is handled automatically, ensuring the cache stays up-to-date while minimizing mobile data usage.

Using Amethyst in Practice

Now that you understand what Amethyst is, let’s dive into how to use it!

1. Creating an Account

To get started with Nostr, you’ll need to create a pair of keys:

A private key

A public key

When you first open the Amethyst app, you’ll be greeted with a screen to either access an existing account (by importing a key if you’re migrating from another Nostr client) or create a new one.

In this example, we’ll focus on creating a new account:

Under “Don’t have a Nostr account?”, click on the “Submit” button. You will then be redirected to the following screen.

Choose a name for your username and click on “Create Account”.

By default, your “feed” (home page) will be empty.

2. Searching for Other Users

From the main page, click on the magnifying glass icon (in the top right corner) and type in the name of the profile you are looking for.

In this example, we will search for the Area Bitcoin profile.

Be cautious of profiles attempting to impersonate the one you’re searching for, especially if it belongs to a public figure or a well-known institution.

To ensure you’re accessing the correct profile, use its public key, which is unique across the network.

Therefore, the Area Bitcoin public key is: npub13zpemj05wvgadhgyyv4e0captmkd64p8kz323pfq87ffahrws0ms9yp5ww

Follow us while you’re at it! 😉

Once done, enter the address of your Lightning wallet in the “LN Address” region and then click on “Save”.

5. Structure of a note in Amethyst

Notes (posts) shared on the Nostr network and displayed in the Amethyst app follow a structured format, as shown in the screenshot below.

From left to right at the bottom of a note, you’ll see:

The number of comments on the note.

The number of reshares.

The number of reactions, which can include any emoji.

The number of zaps sent for that note.

By the way, zaps are satoshis (small Bitcoin units) sent to support a post. For example, in the note shown above, 7 satoshis were sent.

6. Sending a Zap

To send a Zap, ensure your Lightning wallet is connected to your account. Select a publication you want to support with Zaps. For this example, we’ll choose a publication from one of Nostr’s creators, fiatjaf. Simply click on the Lightning icon and select the amount you wish to send.

Benefits of Using Amethyst and the Nostr Network

1. Privacy and Data Control

One of the greatest benefits of Amethyst is the control it provides over personal data.

Unlike traditional social networks, where user data is stored on centralized servers, Nostr distributes data across relays.

With Amethyst, users can choose which relays to use, increasing privacy and giving them greater control over where their information is stored.

2. Freedom of Expression and Reduced Censorship

Nostr’s decentralization makes content censorship extremely difficult, as there is no centralized server to control or regulate.

Amethyst users have the freedom to express their opinions and share information without fear of being blocked or censored. This attracts many advocates of freedom of expression and network neutrality.

3. Scalability and Fault Tolerance

The relay-based architecture model allows Nostr to be scalable and fault-tolerant. Even if one relay goes offline, users can connect to other relays and continue accessing the network. Amethyst facilitates this switching, ensuring a more stable and reliable experience in decentralized environments.

4. Advanced Encryption and Security Support

Nostr’s public key encryption protects message content and ensures that only the legitimate sender can sign and authenticate messages sent.

Amethyst leverages this security infrastructure transparently, providing users with a platform where they can communicate securely without fear of their messages being intercepted.

Comparison with Other Nostr Clients and Traditional Social Networks

When compared to other Nostr clients like Primal or Damus, Amethyst offers a solid experience but has some usability quirks.

For instance, configuring default Zap values is less intuitive in Amethyst. Instead of having a dedicated section in the sidebar, users must hold down the Zap button for the configuration option to appear.

Another area where Amethyst falls short compared to Damus is in handling private key generation and confirmation.

When creating an account, Damus emphasizes securely storing the private key, displaying a screen for users to confirm they have recorded the key on paper or another secure method before accessing the network. This process closely resembles how Bitcoin wallets generate user seeds.

In contrast, Amethyst creates the account directly, requiring users to access their profiles afterward to securely store their keys.

However, Amethyst represents a substantial improvement compared to traditional social networks. It provides users with greater control over their data and employs an architecture that fosters freedom of expression.

Unlike centralized platforms like Facebook or X (formerly Twitter), Amethyst, in combination with Nostr, removes intermediaries, reduces censorship, and enhances security. This structural difference has a profound effect on privacy, as Nostr lacks a single control point or entity capable of selling, manipulating, or exploiting users’ personal data.

Challenges and Limitations of Amethyst and Nostr

Despite their many advantages, Amethyst and Nostr face several challenges:

Learning Curve: For users unfamiliar with decentralized networks and encryption, navigating Nostr can present a steep learning curve, especially when accessing advanced features. While Amethyst offers a user-friendly interface, beginners may still struggle with concepts like public keys, relay configurations, and using the Tor network.

Dependence on Available Relays: The quality of the Amethyst experience relies heavily on the availability and reliability of relays. If many relays go offline or implement fees to cover operational costs, this could disrupt communication and message storage within the network.

“Lack” of Recommendation Algorithms: Amethyst and the Nostr protocol prioritize user control over data, intentionally omitting features like content recommendation algorithms and engagement analytics found in centralized platforms. For users accustomed to a “TikTok-style” experience, where content is algorithmically tailored to keep attention, Amethyst may feel “too manual” or monotonous, requiring a shift in expectations and mindset.

Final Thoughts

Amethyst marks a significant innovation in decentralized social networks, providing a platform where users have full control over their data and can communicate securely and privately.

With its user-friendly interface and robust security features, Amethyst enables users to fully harness the potential of Nostr, delivering an accessible and efficient experience.

Although it faces some technical and usability challenges, Amethyst represents a meaningful step toward freer and more secure online communication, where users retain ownership of their data.

In a time when privacy, censorship, and data control are at the forefront of conversations about the internet’s future, Amethyst and the Nostr protocol have the potential to redefine online interactions.

That’s all for now! I hope you found this article insightful. If you’re curious and want to explore Amethyst, give it a try and connect with us there.

Until next time, opt out!

Clients are applications that let you access and interact with the Nostr network by using a pair of public and private keys to publish notes, comment, and share—ensuring both security and privacy.

If you’ve heard about Nostr, you might be wondering: what exactly is it?

While many describe Nostr as a social network, it’s actually much more than that. Nostr has the potential to be the true decentralized web.

Initially, Nostr’s main purpose was to create social networks, but unlike Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, Nostr doesn’t have an official website or app. This is because Nostr is a protocol, and based on it, multiple applications can be developed.

In this article, we’ll focus specifically on clients, a fundamental part of how the Nostr protocol functions.

Let’s dive in!

Table of contents:

What is Nostr?

How does Nostr work?

The role of clients in Nostr

What types of Nostr clients exist?

Conclusion

What is Nostr?

Nostr, short for “Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays,” is an open-source protocol designed to enable the creation of decentralized applications and networks.

Unlike traditional social networks like Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, which rely on centralized servers and have official websites and apps, Nostr operates in a completely different way.

As an open protocol, Nostr allows many applications and services to be developed without the need for a single controlling entity. Its core idea is to decentralize how data is transmitted and stored.

How does Nostr work?

To understand the role of clients, it’s essential to first grasp how Nostr functions.

As mentioned, instead of relying on a centralized server, Nostr uses a system of relays to transmit and store data.

When a user posts a note, it’s sent to one or more relays, which then make it accessible to other users connected to those relays.

Unlike centralized social networks where users create accounts with usernames and passwords, in Nostr, users generate an account by creating a pair of keys: a private key and a public key. This setup is quite similar to Bitcoin, which is why bitcoiners were among the first to adopt Nostr.

Private Key

With the private key, users can start posting on any application that supports Nostr, with these posts sent to default or user-selected relays.

Since the private key isn’t tied to a specific app, users can use it to access their account across any app that supports Nostr.

It’s like having a single login and password to access Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, and other platforms.

Public Key

The public key, on the other hand, can be shared so others can find users on the network.

This pair of keys essentially serves as your identity on the Nostr network.

But what does this have to do with Nostr clients?

That’s what we’re about to explore.

The role of clients in Nostr

In Nostr, clients are applications that enable users to access the Nostr protocol and interact with the various relays that store data.

When users log into a Nostr client with their private key, they can make posts (called “notes”), comment, like, or share other users’ content.

Once connected, users get a “social media” experience, with the client serving as their primary interface with the protocol.

Nostr connects people at the protocol’s core level. This means that by following someone or being followed, you can interact with them regardless of which Nostr client you’re using.

In other words, there’s no need to re-establish connections if you switch clients.

Pretty cool, right?

Nostr Clients perform several key functions, including:

Connection to Relays: They connect to multiple relays, allowing users to post and receive notes. The variety of relays ensures that the network remains resilient even if some relays fail or are censored.

Posting Notes: Through them, users can create and post notes. These notes can contain text, links, and other types of content and are distributed across connected relays.

Reading Notes: Clients also allow users to read notes posted by others. This includes the ability to filter notes by various criteria, such as author, hashtags, or keywords.

Social Interaction: Many clients offer features like liking, commenting, or sharing notes, with specific interactions varying between clients.

Security and Privacy: Nostr clients can incorporate various layers of security, such as end-to-end encryption for private messages and decentralized authentication. This ensures that communications are secure and private.

What types of clients exist?

There are various types of Nostr clients, each offering unique features and experiences.

The primary difference between clients is the platform they run on. Some are web-based and accessible through any browser, others are desktop applications that require download and installation on your computer, and finally, there are mobile clients—native apps for Android or iOS.

No matter which client you choose, all of them will generate a pair of public and private keys. Once users have their keys, it’s crucial to store them securely, as losing these keys means losing access to the account.

Moreover, unlike centralized platforms, there is no option to reset or recover an account via email.

Let’s take a look at how you can access Nostr clients:

Websites

Accessing the Nostr network through web clients is straightforward. With your private key, you can log into a website and start interacting with other users, much like on traditional social networks.

Examples of websites include:

noStrudel,

Iris,

Primal,

and Snort Social.

Mobile Apps

You can also access Nostr by downloading an app on your mobile device, offering a familiar experience akin to other social media apps.

Examples of mobile apps include:

Primal,

Damus,

Amethyst,

and Plebstr.

As we’ve seen throughout this article, there are several clients available, each offering unique features. The Nostr ecosystem’s growth and user retention will be crucial in competing within the social media space, which is currently dominated by large companies with substantial resources.

Conclusion

Nostr marks a significant step toward a truly decentralized web, with clients playing a vital role in the network’s functionality and usability. These clients not only enable users to post and read notes but also offer features that enrich the social experience while safeguarding communication security and privacy.

As Nostr continues to gain popularity and its clients evolve, it has the potential to transform our online interactions, offering a freer, safer, and more private experience in a world where data is often surveilled and exposed.

I hope this article has helped you understand what Nostr clients are!

Until next time—opt out and stay private!

Have you ever thought about how the social networks we use today work? Platforms like Facebook, Twitter (now X), and Instagram dominate internet communication, accumulating enormous power over the flow of information and interaction among users.

This monopoly creates a scenario where a few corporations have almost absolute control over the content, the visibility of posts, and even user data.

This centralization allows these companies to impose rules, censor content, and manipulate algorithms, prioritizing their commercial interests over user rights and freedom.

This model not only threatens the diversity of voices on the internet but also exposes user data to privacy and security risks, raising concerns about the future of online communication and freedom of expression.

It was this scenario that led to the creation of new technologies by people who value freedom. One such technology is Nostr, an open-source protocol that offers an alternative to current systems with its apps and services.

In this article, you’ll learn about Primal, a social media platform with an integrated Bitcoin wallet, built using the Nostr protocol. Additionally, we’ll show you how to start using Nostr through Primal.

First, what is Nostr?

Nostr is an open-source protocol that offers a decentralized alternative to traditional web and social media, where each user controls their digital identity and content without relying on centralized intermediaries.

The protocol is quickly gaining prominence as a promising ecosystem for free expression. Based on principles similar to Bitcoin, Nostr gives users complete control over their communication, without the risk of censorship from large companies.

One of Nostr’s most innovative features is its native integration with Bitcoin and the Lightning Network. This allows users to include their Lightning addresses in their profiles and send satoshi tips (small units of Bitcoin) for posts they like.

This feature provides a direct way to show monetary appreciation for content, unlike conventional social networks.

For content creators and regular users, Nostr not only offers a censorship-free alternative but also a new form of digital engagement that values privacy and autonomy.

Several applications based on this technology have emerged from Nostr, such as Primal, Damus, and Amethyst, which are Nostr clients and are being developed to offer a faster and more efficient user experience.

But, what are clients?

Nostr clients are software applications that allow users to connect to the Nostr protocol and interact with the various relays that store data.

Now that you know what Nostr is, let’s dive into Primal.

What is Primal?

Primal is one of the main platforms (apps) in the Nostr ecosystem, designed to offer a decentralized, censorship-resistant solution for social media, with Bitcoin and Lightning integration.

Unlike traditional centralized platforms, Primal gives users more control over their data and interactions.

As you can see in the image above, Primal looks a lot like Twitter (X social network), where users can post, send inbox messages to another user, like, save, share, and comment.

Additionally, users can send satoshis to each other as thanks for relevant content.

In 2023, Primal received $1 million in funding from investors such as Ten31 and Hivemind Ventures, becoming the first venture-backed startup focused exclusively on creating applications based on the Nostr protocol.

Pretty cool, right? But who’s behind this app?

Who created Primal?

Primal was created by Miljan Braticevic, an experienced software entrepreneur.

Over the years, he has been involved in several successful startups, especially in the enterprise software and developer tools sectors.

In 2016, he attempted to retire but became interested in Bitcoin and decided to continue his entrepreneurial career.

Rise Wallet and more!

Miljan founded Rise Wallet, a company that helped new users enter the world of Bitcoin using physical gift cards.

The idea was simple: users would buy a gift card worth $25, $50, or $100, install the Rise wallet, scan the code, and receive their Bitcoin easily and securely.

However, despite their efforts, the startup didn’t achieve the expected success, and Miljan eventually sold the company.

In the following years, Miljan dedicated himself to researching and testing different protocols, even attempting to create his own. However, he wasn’t satisfied with the results until he discovered the Nostr protocol in 2022.

Initially skeptical, Miljan changed his mind when he saw the attention Nostr was receiving, especially after Jack Dorsey mentioned it on Twitter. After reading the specifications, Miljan saw Nostr’s potential and decided to create a new project: Primal.

Thus, Primal was born from Miljan’s passion for innovation and his desire to contribute to the advancement of decentralized technologies.

Key features of Primal

Here are some of the key features of Primal, now that you’re familiar with the app and its creator:

1. Free and open-source platform

Users don’t need to pay to use the platform; it’s completely free. Just download it and start using it.

Additionally, Primal is open-source, meaning anyone or any developer can participate in the project’s development.

2. ZAPs

Primal has a “zaps” feature, which are small Bitcoin transactions that users can send directly to other creators and posts.

These micropayments are made easy through integration with the Lightning Network, ensuring fast and cost-free transactions.

3. Integrated Lightning Wallet

Users can store and exchange their Bitcoins directly within the Primal app, thanks to the integrated Lightning wallet. This simplifies the process, eliminates unnecessary hurdles, and makes it easier to participate in the Nostr economy.

Additionally, this Bitcoin Lightning wallet allows you to send, scan, and receive payments.

Another cool feature of the wallet is that by clicking the money exchange symbol in the top right corner of the screen, users can exchange their local currency for satoshis.

By clicking “purchase now“, the buying process is done through the App Store, using your registered Apple account and card.

4. Censorship-resistant

Primal has a simple and user-friendly interface, but its real power lies in its commitment to decentralization. It connects to several Nostr relays, ensuring that no company or person controls the network. This helps prevent censorship and gives users more control over their online presence.

How to set up a Primal account

Now let’s understand how you can use Primal in practice. Just follow the steps below:

Step 1 – Download the app:

Go to the site primal.net and choose whether to download the app for mobile (supports iOS and Android) or use it directly on your PC. For this guide, I’ll show you how to install it on a mobile device. So, I’ll download the app.

Step 2 – Create your account:

After downloading the app from the official site, a screen will appear where you can either log in or create an account.

For this guide, we’ll create a fictional Area Bitcoin blog account. After clicking “create account“, on the next screen, you’ll enter your name and a short description about yourself, then click “Next.”

Step 3 – Customize your interests:

On the next screen, Primal will ask your interests. I selected Bitcoin, Nostr, music, and sports. After clicking “next”, a confirmation screen will appear for your bio, you can also change your banner photo.

If everything looks good, just click “Create Account” to set up the account.

Step 4 – Secure your keys:

Done, now your account is created!

However, an important message will appear. Primal warns that your keys are available in the account settings.

From now on, this account has a private key and a public key, much like how Bitcoin works. If you lose your private key, you’ll lose access to your account, so it’s crucial to keep your private key safe.

The public key, as the name implies, is public and can be used for others to find your profile on any Nostr app.

Account created, it’s time to activate the wallet in Primal!

For that the app will ask for some information, such as name, email, date of birth, and country of residence. This seems a bit counterintuitive for a privacy-focused platform, but apart from the email, I entered random data.

Afterward, just click “next”.

Step 5 – Activate your wallet and email confirmation:

The app will now ask for an email confirmation, where you’ll enter the code in the designated space.

Once done, click “finish”, and a “success, your wallet is activated” screen will appear. This Lightning wallet allows you to send and receive Bitcoin via zaps within Primal.

Step 6 – your account is ready:

Congratulations, your account is set up!

After clicking “done”, the screen will show your account in operation, already following other accounts based on your interests.

Now you can explore the app and make your first posts!

Conclusion

Both Nostr and Primal are still in their early stages, but the potential is clear. By combining decentralization, micropayments, and ease of use, Primal envisions a future where creators are paid directly, users control their data, and censorship is non-existent.

However, despite the enthusiasm, it’s essential to recognize the challenges ahead. Nostr’s adoption is still low compared to big tech social networks. Nevertheless, Primal’s commitment to user experience and building a solid community shows that they are ready for this journey.

If you’re looking for a social network that prioritizes your privacy, rewards quality content, and offers financial tools, Primal is a great option. Download the app, join this growing community, and experience the future of social interactions.

We know that security is a crucial characteristic when using the Internet. Nowadays, things have evolved to the point where our data can be easily shared around, right?

Additionally, another important factor to consider today is that social networks are increasingly becoming less about freedom of expression, with instances of censorship on the rise.

Traditional social networks are leaving users dissatisfied due to increased censorship, advertisements, and, in some cases, even requiring paid subscriptions to use and have a more personalized experience.

Therefore, many developers are striving to create a decentralized social network where people can express themselves freely without the risk of having their information leaked or used by large corporations.

This is how the Damus app emerged, a Nostr client, which is a social network similar to X (formerly Twitter). And today, we will understand more about Damus in this article.

Let’s dive in!

What is Nostr?

Nostr is a free, open-source protocol that allows the creation of a decentralized social network; meaning it doesn’t require a central server or a company responsible for its operations.

This protocol enables the existence of a censorship-resistant social network, and the most common way people use Nostr is through apps similar to Twitter (X).

However, it is possible to create a Nostr client with various functionalities, such as an app similar to Telegram or a censorship-resistant version of Wikipedia.

Nostr operates with two essential components:

Clients: These are apps created on the platform and function as a social network. Damus, which we will discuss later, is a Nostr client.

Relays: These are software and hardware that send, receive, and store text messages. Relays can be operated by anyone with a computer and an Internet connection. They function similarly to Bitcoin nodes.

Additionally, creating an account on a Nostr client does not require providing your name, date of birth, email, or any similar information.

Therefore, creating an account on one Nostr client also serves other Nostr clients, functioning as a large network of interconnected apps.

What is Damus?

Damus is a decentralized social network developed by William Casarin that operates on Nostr.

Damus is a Nostr client, meaning an app available for iOS, iPad, and MacOS. It was officially released on the App Store on January 31, 2023.

The app’s purpose is to be similar to X but aims to surpass it. With Damus, you can post texts, videos, images, and even gifs. Additionally, texts can be longer than on X.

You can also make ‘zaps’ in the app, which is essentially sending some satoshis to a user directly through the app.

Moreover, you can ‘zap’ someone’s profile or a post they made.

How did the Damus app emerge on Nostr?

Damus, a decentralized social network, emerged on Nostr with the support of important figures in the Bitcoin world like Jack Dorsey and William Casarin, the project’s creator and developer.

Shortly after Nostr’s protocol was announced, several people supported the idea, including Twitter’s co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey, who donated nearly 14 BTC, equivalent to US$245,000 at the time, to fund Nostr’s development in 2022.

Fiatjaf, Nostr’s programmer and creator, received the donation. He then announced on his Twitter (X) profile that half of the funds would go to the DFND – Damus Foundation for Nostr Development.

Soon after, Jack Dorsey himself tweeted when the Damus app was launched.

https://twitter.com/jack/status/1620552041600000000?s=20

As stated above, Damus was founded and developed by William Casarin. However, it had the help of 44 more developers involved in the project.

In addition, the application was first released on the App Store, only for iPhone.

Characteristics of Damus

As we have seen throughout the article, Damus is a decentralized social networking app that gained prominence due to its unique features, based on the Nostr protocol (Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays).

Some of its main characteristics are:

User control: There is no platform to ban users, as everything is built on an open-source system.

No registration required: No need to share personal information.

No addictive algorithms and free from ads and advertisements.

You can send and receive tips (zaps) via the Lightning Network, support content creators, and help circulate the best money in the world, Bitcoin.

Relays help avoid DDoS attacks.

Interoperable with any other Nostr app.

Damus Purple

Damus Purple is a subscription service aimed at “free speech maximalists,” according to their website. This subscription provides exclusive features to users and helps fund the project.

However, it is important to note that subscribing to Damus Purple is not necessary to have a good experience with the app. The subscription aims to offer additional benefits to those who wish to support the project financially.

Subscribers to Damus Purple get the following benefits:

Support Damus development, helping to build the future of decentralized communication;

Early access to premium features, such as automatic translation and longer notes;

Receive a special badge on their profile as recognition for their contribution to the technology.

The Damus Purple subscription costs 15,000 sats per month, which is approximately $8.50 at the current exchange rate, and can be paid via Lightning or fiat currency through Apple Pay for iOS devices.

How does privacy work in the Damus app?

Privacy in Damus is guaranteed by a system of public and private keys (similar to Bitcoin), eliminating the need for logins and putting users in control of their data.

Since it is a decentralized network, privacy is a very important factor in Damus. Its proposal is to be much more secure with your data than any other social networking app.

Therefore, your IP address is exposed to relays (transmitters) you connect to and third-party media hosts, such as nostr.build, imgur.com, giphy.com, youtube.com, among others.

Your IP is rendered on Damus itself. To enhance your privacy, consider using a service that hides your IP address from online trackers, such as VPN services.

Relays can also identify which public keys you are requesting, meaning your public key will be linked to your IP address.

It is publicly known which other profiles (npubs – public addresses) you are exchanging direct messages (DMs) with. However, the content of the DMs is encrypted.

Comparing Damus with other apps

Damus has emerged as an efficient and decentralized alternative to Twitter and Mastodon, which also offer decentralized social networking.

However, Damus stands out for its unique aspects compared to these alternatives.

While Twitter operates with a centralized server, Mastodon has several servers distributed around the world. However, there is a risk of some of these servers acting authoritatively and compromising the network.

In the case of Damus, there are multiple servers, known as relays, globally distributed. Therefore, if you post something that a specific relay does not want to transmit, your message will still be disseminated by another relay, ensuring uncensored communication.

How to use Damus on Nostr?

First, download the Damus app from the App Store.

<img decoding="async" width="798" height="1600" src="https://blog.areabitcoin.co/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Damus-app-1.jpg" alt="App Damus" class="wp-image-2057" style="width:auto;height:600px" title="What is the Damus app?
After downloading the app, open it and click on “Let’s get started!”. Don’t forget to accept the terms of service.

If you already have a Nostr account, just paste your access key. But if you are creating a new account, click on ‘Create Account’.

Let’s follow the tutorial for those creating their first account on Damus.

After clicking on “Create Account,” your public key and an avatar will be displayed on the screen. If you wish, you can replace this avatar with a photo of yourself and enter your name and description.

Then, click on “Create Account Now.”

Now, your public and private keys will be displayed on the screen. Store the private key in a safe place, as it is the key to access your profile.

Done! Now, when you access Damus, you will notice that the interface is very similar to Twitter’s.

Finally, by clicking on your avatar (in the upper left corner), a sidebar with several options will be displayed.

In this sidebar, you can access your profile, where you will find information about your public key, the number of people you follow, your followers, and the number of relays you are connected to.

Additionally, in the “wallet” tab, you can connect a wallet to start receiving and sending satoshis via the app through the Lightning Network.

Conclusion

The internet is evolving, and this isn’t the “web 3” idea that many crypto enthusiasts have been spreading around.

Damus is the result of a truly decentralized protocol that can change the way we use social networks, websites, and how our information is shared on the internet.

If you think traditional social networks are boring, with too much censorship, excessive ads, and an algorithm that doesn’t seem useful, then Damus is an excellent alternative to escape the dominance of big techs owning social networks.

Additionally, if you don’t have an iOS device to use Damus, don’t worry, as there is an Android equivalent called Amethyst.

The app works the same way and has a similar interface but is for Android.

I hope you enjoyed this article.

See you next time!
